Conor McGregor is currently in discussions with UFC about a new contract as he prepares for his return to the octagon at UFC 303 on June 29. The former two-division champion has two fights remaining on his existing contract and is eager to increase his activity in the ring, having last competed in 2021 when he sustained a severe leg injury during a bout with Dustin Poirier. McGregor has outlined his ambition to fight three times in 2024, starting with his upcoming match against Michael Chandler.
During a recent Duelbits live chat, McGregor shared his hopes for the year: "Three bouts this year, starting June 29, then September 5—on Mexican Independence Day—and a final exciting match in December to round off the year." He added a note of caution, acknowledging that unforeseen circumstances have altered his plans in the past: "I've learned from life that unexpected things like injuries can happen, but God willing, I'll fight three times this year."
McGregor is particularly keen on participating in the UFC 306 event scheduled for September 5 at the newly constructed Sphere venue in Las Vegas, a $2.3 billion arena featuring extensive LED screen installations. This event, which UFC CEO Dana White has heavily invested in, marks the venue's debut in hosting a major sports event.
Despite McGregor’s interest in a rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 306 to conclude their trilogy—each having won one fight previously—Dana White quickly dismissed the idea, partly because Diaz is not currently signed with UFC. Regardless, McGregor remains committed to securing a fight on the September card and is looking forward to another bout before the year ends.
Expressing his enthusiasm, McGregor stated, "I'm really looking forward to fighting again this year, ideally before my next birthday. After that, I’m aiming to be back for the September fight at The Sphere for Mexican Independence Day. I’ve openly stated my preference for the Diaz trilogy, though that suggestion was promptly shot down. Still, with Diaz and [Jorge] Masvidal soon facing off in a boxing match, I’m exploring other potential opponents."
As one of the sport's top attractions, McGregor is confident he won't struggle to find challengers willing to face him. His immediate focus, however, is on his fight with Michael Chandler in June, after which he plans to evaluate his options for the remainder of the year.
